As Command watched the B-17's taking off the Bomber 'Lonesome Owl' rolled down the runway gaining speed. This was a very dangerous time until Speed was made to Defeat natures wanting to keep everything glued to Mother Earth. Of course the Bombers were loaded to the Max for there was no reason flying 100's/1,000's of miles to deliver Old Adolph just a few Eggs. Just as 'Lonesome Owl' broke free of the runway both engines on the right side sputtered. That was all it took. Mother Nature reached out and jerked the Bomber to the Ground and there all the efforts of Man to succeed in Flight and War was engulfed in a Fireball. Ten fine Gallant Airmen who had flown 7 Missions for the Eighth would now Fly on Angel Wings. Letters sent Home to Loved Ones would only state they had Died on a Mission and All knew the Risks involved feeling the Price of Freedom was worth the Undertaking. What brave Men the Eighth had under their Command. And the next Bomber would take off thinking 'Lonesome Owls' Time had came this Day but Their Time would not come, they would defeat Mother Natures grasp Today and for the rest of this awful War and return home to the Ones who Loved Them.
