CHARIOT

Date: March 19, 1942
Operation Name: Chariot
Location: St Nazaire, France

Orders:
In the second week of January 1942 the German battleship Tirpitz moved from the Baltic through the Kiel Canal and north to Trondheim on the Norwegian coast, causing great worry that it would break out into the North Atlantic and wreak havoc on Allied shipping convoys. Attempts to bomb the Tirpitz failed so an alternate plan was devised to ensure the Germans would not have a suitable dry-dock for it on the Atlantic coast, which is neccessary to operate the ship.

The only suitable facility is the port of St. Nazaire, and specifically the "Forme Ecluse Louis Joubert", also known as the "Normandie" dry-dock. The final plan is for a commando force to land near the dock and destroy as much of the dock facilities as possible and then withdraw. Meanwhile a converted destroyer packed with explosives on a timed charge, the HMS Campbelltown, will ram the outer dock gates and then scuttle itself in the hope that the explosion will destroy the gates and render the dock unuseable. The port of St Nazaire, which also includes submarine pens, is arguably the most heavily defended area along the German-occupied Atlantic coast so stealth and speed will be important.

Note:
When the HMS Campbelltown appears it must capture the 2 hexes in the ocean plus the dock gate.
