On May 10, 1940, the Germans launched Operation Fall Gelb, an invasion of France. It started with the attack on the Benelux countries. The German command was planning to outflank the Maginot Line by invading forces through southern Belgium and northern France. Such a direction of attack was to cut off the British Expeditionary Force and many French divisions, forcing France to surrender. To achieve this goal, the Germans had to defeat the Belgian and Dutch armies, neutralizing or evacuating the fortifications. Some of them were poorly defended but had the task of delaying the attack. Some defensive positions were more heavily defended; They had significant fortifications and strong garrisons. The German command was planning to use two divisions (the 7th Parachute Division and the 22nd Infantry Division) to create a corridor the 18th Army would move deep into the Netherlands, without hindering the destruction of the Alberta's bridges.

Operational tasks:
-Comandoes from battle groups: Stahl, Beton, Eisen, Granite will be dropped near the bridges on the Alberta Canal. Their goal is to keep bridges at all costs until the arrival of the Vermeer.
