After the Polish Army occupied Kiev on May 7, 1920, it became clear that Pilsudski's plan for the decisive battle with the Red Army in Ukraine lay in ruins. The Bolsheviks avoided the battle by retreating from the right bank of Ukraine, thus giving it its capital - Kiev. At the same time, the command of the Red Army commanded a veteran of the 1st Armored Cavalry Brigade of Semyon Budionne to transport their forces to Ukraine and begin an offensive that would outflank the advanced positions of the Polish troops.

The Soviet offensive began on May 26, 1920, when the 12th Army and the Jan Jakir Dniepr's corps were crossed, followed by an attack on the weakest part of the Polish defense line. On the same day the Polish Army conducted a reconnaissance, which caused the first attacked unit to be a weak inexperienced 7th Division.
