On December 26, 1943, 1st Division units appeared at Cape Gloucester. It was one of the amphibious operations of the Cartwheel operation.
The destination of the marines was the Japanese airfield. To defend the area, the imperial army allocated mixed units from three divisions, commonly called "Matsuda Force".
The main division forces landed on the north-east coast of Borgen Bay, and one reinforced battalion was to capture a bridgehead on the west coast to prevent the Japanese from delivering food to the aerodrome battlefield.
