Report of the G-2 Division for SHAEF - August 9, 1945
Attn:: Commander of the 6th US Army Corps

It applies to:
Socio-political aspects of further eastward action.

After crossing the Oder River, our troops enter the territories which according to the Yalta regulations may be in Polish hands. In many cities, already since the spring the Polish administration operates. It is important to emphasize that Poland is not our opponent. Unfortunately, at this time, we can not present any predictions about the possible behavior of LWP (Polish People's Army) units. It must be borne in mind that the staff of these units are mostly Russians. There are even whole units formally in the LWP, but composed of Red Army soldiers.
In this situation, their behavior can be completely unpredictable.
If there were fighting with LWP, unnecessary brutality should be avoided, and with regard to the defeated, do not use the word "prisoner". These people are to be transferred to refugee centers or interned. In no case are prisoners of war camps in Germany.
