Report of the G-2 Division for SHAEF - July 31, 1945
Attn:: Commander of the 6th US Army Corps

The Red Army's forces behind the Oder are hard to estimate. We have reason to believe that the previous attack on Berlin was only a delaying action that was to allow defensive positions to be built behind the river. However, the Soviet Union still has problems with fuel caused by effective sabotage of supply lines running through Poland. The most likely defensive variant is deep-defended static defense with a large number of artillery and armored units in recoil.

In reference to the previous report, we inform our technical services that we have been able to start production in the next six German armaments factories. This means a significant reduction in our supply lines, which at the moment puts the Russians in a worse situation, as all of their supplies must be transported through Poland.

The issue of possible recruitment of former Wehrmacht soldiers is negative. It must be borne in mind that in our units there are many soldiers who have gone through German POW camps and have seen crimes in the occupied territories. On the other hand, the use of the experience of German officers, at our staffs, we leave the matter open, of course with the exclusion of former SS officers and those suspected of war crimes.
