In the last days of April 3 US Army stood on the former German-Czech border. Prague was just over 100 km apart. Patton wanted to hit the east immediately, but Eisenhower personally forbade him to liberate Czechoslovakia, which was to be the Soviet zone of influence. He allowed only limited action towards Karlovy Vary.

The main task of the Americans was to guard cross-border mountain passes, through which, to the west, the larger or smaller groups of Wehrmacht and Waffen SS were penetrated to the west - beaten in the Czech Republic and Hungary.
