Although the Soviet offensive was stalled in the south, the Kharkov bounced back in late February. The withdrawal of German troops from the city was once again read as a sign of the breakdown of the enemy. Meanwhile, the Red Army was already on the edge of its offensive capabilities. Nevertheless, Hitler personally flew to Ukraine and gave a sharp reprimand to Mannstein and Hausser, demanding that Kharkov return at all costs. This task was entrusted to the SS Corps.

7th Armored Division conducted operations on the southern wing of the offensive. Their goal was to stop the Russians from forcing Don Siewierski and capture the city of Izjum.
