After an unsuccessful operation in the Ardennes, bloody SS battalions of the 6th Armored Division were hastily supplemented in early 1945 and prepared for another big offensive operation. At the same time, around mid-month, it was renamed to the 6th Pancerna SS. The Hungarian offensive was set to be the next offensive. The task that was set before Sepp Dietrich consisted in the reflection of Budapest, which was controlled by the Soviet army since February 13. The indirect aim was to weaken the Soviet troops in that area and prevent them from carrying out the offensive to Vienna, and to relieve the remaining sections of the front, especially in order to force the Russians to charge large meals off the Odra.
